Funny that you state he has no interest in those 2 locales. He sure spends alot of time at those locales and has shown some of my friends boas he has picked up on many occasions. He has been observed over the past 2 years with 24+ boas in those 2 locales that he "has no interest whatsoever". Hopefully some of those folks that have run into him up there will post their incounters with him on this forum.

Those that are truely passionate about the boas and other herps, don't go around collecting everything they come across. Even if you collect the boa, drive around for awhile, then turn it loose when you are done herping, you've disrupted what the animal was doing naturally and it may not get to where it was going in time to avoid the temperatures and/or preditors. The animals have a tough time out there and they don't need someone going around picking them up and releasing them in different spots or even worse taking way more than the bag limits.

Two night trip: Full house - Kings and Rosy's

Posting by GP, Friday, May 18, 2012, 15:37:

Day One: Found 2 rosy's both after 10:45 or so. No photo of the first find out of respect for a friend's spot because it was a screamer and a clear photo could give away the locale. But I do have a video clip of the rosy that is pixelated so you cannot tell where abouts it was found, just click on the link below the video capture pic:

Click on: http://s855.photobucket.com/albums/ab111/gplacers/?action=view&current=VIDEO0035-1.mp4

Then about an hour later found this young adult just a little west of Hayfield Rd.

Day 2: Wore my lucky King (LeBron) James shirt and found 3 Kingsnakes in about an hour of grove hunting in Mecca. The first one was a huge female, and it took massive dump all over me. Then a little later, I found a male almost 2 1/2 ft and as I was videoing him, a female king, almost 4 ft, comes crossing the road right in front of me coming towards me. So I get my digital camera in the car because I anticipated a breeding occurrence possibly. I snapped the photo of them about a foot apart then next thing I know, BOOM, the female bit the male and wrapped around him like Food! Holy S!!! I dropped my camera to separate them! Snapping a photo of the female wrapped around was not on my mind at the time, I wanted to get her unwrapped and off him ASAP.

Tough pill to swallow, I went on this trip without any containers and it would of been nice to have one of the female Cal kings to make a Locale Trio at home. I didn't even think to bring socks with me, just wore sandles. Grrrr.

First pic is of the first Female Cal King, from cell phone, second pic is the other two I found just before the female attacked the male.

Reply by Brendan, Friday, May 18, 2012, 11:45:

Will I drive each of the "cheater boa" ranges once or twice a year to take pics of specks and J.O. has always been up there on a quad with a boa or two in the cooler. Can't see any reason why someone needs to spend time in the two most over hunted and easy ranges to find boas in this state. It's sad because any time I am alone up there and I see boas I never even touch them. I leave them on the road as found and after a quick photo I drive around them and usually seem them several more times doing what they do.
Anyone doing anything with taxonomy would have no reason to sample those ranges. We already know what they are and there are probably thousands of them in the captive pet trade. Their genetics are no great secret.
Hopefully the people who defend him know without a doubt he is legit but I have never heard a good thing from anyone about him.

My understanding is that he has no interest whatsoever in common locale boas from places like the Harcs and Harqs and that when he does see them, he takes down some info and releases the snake back in the wild.

I know that when my buddy came out there and hunted with him, my buddy had a permit and took home a nice pair of boas for his breeding project. I also had a permit and I took a boa home because I had another friend who wanted one. (I no longer keep snakes in captivity myself)

Last time I checked, it is perfectly legal to catch a boa or two in AZ, with a permit, and take it home.

Regarding the scientific research........I am know biologist, but I think he is trying to better understand the relationships between the different locales of Lichanura.

As far as him coming on here and sharing his information.....My guess is that I don't think that is going to happen. I know that over the last 30 years he has shared a lot of information with some of the bigger names in the Lichanura literature world and on at least two occasions, his information was stolen and "credit" for the "discoveries" was taken from him.

If you have some interesting information to share regarding the taxonomic structure of Lichanura, I am sure he would love to swap ideas with you.

We all hang out on this forum because we are all passionate about rosy boas.

What is Ottley doing with all the boas that are picked up on Harcuvar and Harquahala? I've heard reports of 20 to 30 boas picked up in the past 2 seasons.
He has told one friend of mine they are for a research project he is doing? What is the research project? Maybe he can come on this forum and tell us about it.

NEVADA ROSY BAN UPDATE

Reply by Jerry Hartley, Thursday, May 17, 2012, 06:24:

Thanks for the up-date, this is great news. I appreciate all the efforts that have been made to educate NDOW in what should be regulated. I pray that the relationship you all have established with NDOW will continue to grow and that a concrete resolution will be made by all parties. This is what officials need in terms of illustrating that they are willing to learn, grow, and not just be thought of as bad guys. They have an important job to do, and you guys are helping them to do it correctly. Again, I appreciate all you guys are doing very much.

Thanks again,

NEVADA ROSY BAN UPDATE

Posting by Desert Queen, Wednesday, May 16, 2012, 18:33:

GREAT NEWS TODAY! I got a call from Paul Lynum and after weeks of playing phone tag with Ms. Richards, the head of wildlife diversity of NDOW, all parties are in agreement (administrative, law enforcement, commercial and private) that no ban should be placed on the ownership of non-native rosy boas in the state of Nevada. The next step is to define what traits a native Nevada rosy boa possesses that sets them apart from non-native rosys. Paul is going to submit detailed photographs which are going to be made into charts that wildlife agents can carry in the Newberrys in case they detain anyone in possession of a rosy for identification purposes. These charts will not be used for the harassment of current non-native rosy owners I'm told. Yes, I know this is funny that wildlife agents would need pictures on hand to identify a species that occurs within their jurisdiction, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth...especially one with teeth as big as this one had the potential to be. I think it's a good thing as I have met CA.F.A.G. agents that could not tell the difference between an atrox or a scute! Anyway, there will be no need for a scheduled commission meeting with the public attending ( and I thank all of my CA friends who said they would attend if need be) since all parties are in agreement as to what the outcome should be and what needs to be done at this point regarding this new NDOW regulation.

I would like to thank Paul Lynum for keeping his word and following through with NDOW regarding this issue as well as Ken Foose and Bill Cobb, who have both been committed 100% along with myself and Paul towards a positive outcome. It will take some time to get the amendment on the books, but Nevada rosy owners can all sleep a LOT better tonight.
